The ‘’perceptual‘’ rendering intent is used in colour management to achieve the most pleasant and visually appealing colour reproduction possible. This rendering intent is based on the human perception of colours and takes into account how we perceive and interpret colours.
When using the ‘perceptual’ or ‘perceptive’ rendering intent, the colour values of the original are adjusted so that they appear natural to the human eye. The colours are converted in such a way that they have as similar a visual effect as possible in the target colour space as in the output colour space.
This rendering intent is particularly suitable when the exact colour reproduction is not of decisive importance, but rather a ‘beautiful’ representation is desired. It is often used in areas such as image processing for image bios.
As the perception of colours is subjective, the ‘perceptual’ rendering intent can be perceived differently from person to person. It can also lead to small shifts in the colours in order to achieve an overall harmonious representation. It is therefore important to consider the ‘perceptual’ rendering intent in the context of the project.
In addition to the ‘Perceptual’ rendering intent, there are other rendering intents such as ‘Absolute colourimetric’ and ‘Relative colourimetric’, which can often provide a better result.

Even almost 9 years after the introduction of the successor colour space PSOCoatedV3, ISOCoatedV2 / FOGRA39 is still the most widespread colour space in Europe. We at Proof GmbH count around 200 jobs from time to time for the German Printing and Media Industries Federation, among others. After Eddy Hagen pointed out in this posts, that there were some major colour deviations between the brand new PANTONE Solid Coated Guide 2023 and the previous version especially for the PANTONE 2635 C, I was curious to lookup the same colours in the new PANTONE Color Bridge Coated Guide of 2023 and compare the colours with the previous version.
